There was a slight tendency for EPs from stimuli at the high intensity level (85 dB) to yield higher correlations with ability tests than EPs from stimuli at the low (65 dB) and middle (75 dB) intensity levels. 180 msec correlated consistently and negatively with Gc factor scores and at somewhat lower levels with g factor scores correlations with Gf were rather lower and poorly defined. EP amplitudes and measures of EP complexity/reliability for components with latencies less than approx. EP latency showed inconsistent and low order correlations with Gf, Gc, and general intelligence (g) factor scores. Auditory evoked potentials (EPs) were recorded from temporal and vertex electrode placements under three conditions of stimulus intensity. Confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated that Gf and Gc factors represented moderately correlated, but empirically distinct latent variables. The test battery consisted of the Raven Progressive Matrices and seven subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised and was based on research that yielded factors of fluid (Gf) and crystallized (Gc) intelligence. Each of the 48 college undergraduate subjects was administered a psychometric test battery and a standard series of auditory click stimuli. ![]()
